SEALY, INC. CELEBRATES THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF
POSTUREPEDIC WITH GOLDEN ANNIVERSARY COLLECTION

HIGH POINT, NC, April, 1999

Sealy, Inc. celebrates the 50th year of the Sealy Posturepedic mattress this year with a special Golden Anniversary Collection that will be introduced at the High Point furniture market in April.

"The Sealy Posturepedic brand entering its 50th year of business is a great milestone. It is one of the most recognized names in the entire home furnishings industry, and the foundation of Sealy's business. As we mark the grand opening of our new corporate headquarters in North Carolina, it is fitting to look toward the future with a nod to the past," says Ron L. Jones, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Sealy.

The first Sealy Posturepedic mattress was introduced in 1950, and was the only mattress in the industry that focused on the importance of correct back support.

In the 1960s, Sealy commissioned a research study to define the profile of the Sealy Posturepedic consumer. In 1967, Sealy Posturepedic commercials aired on network television during prime time, another industry first.

The 1970s brought major product developments and refinements. Sealy Posturepedic mattresses went high-tech with programmed coils for increased support. Sealy's boxsprings became known as foundations, due to the development of the torsion bar module.

The end of the 1980s brought the introduction of the industry's newest innerspring innovation, Sealy's patented PostureTech® coil. The coil's patented Sensory Arm™ senses and cushions movement then responds with increasing support.

Long a leader in innovative research and technology, Sealy again made history last year with the unveiling of its Dual Support System (DSS) and MicroTek™ Foundation.

  • Do you have enough sleeping space? Sealy's patented EdgeGuard® system offers 10% more sleeping surface on standard sized mattresses.
  • Check the warranty. If it's expired, it might be time for a new mattress. Even the best mattress and boxspring may no longer provide the correct comfort and support after eight or ten years.
  • Trust your body. Waking up with little aches and pins in generally a good indicator that your body isn't getting the proper rest and support is needs throughout the night.
  • Remember, to get the most life out of your mattress, rotate it every two weeks for the first three months, then every two months after that.
  • Replace the foundation when you replace the mattress. It acts like a shock absorber, taking a lot of the nightly wear and tear. Check your foundation to see if it has steel slats for extra durability.
  • Never give your old mattress to a child or anyone else as a "hand-me-down." It will be no more comfortable or supportive for them then it was for you.

A complete line of bedding products is available from Sealy and its licensees, including mattresses and boxsprings, crib mattresses, children's mattresses, pillows and upholstered furniture.
